I’m a big fan of historic photos.  Adriana, one of our readers, was kind enough to forward these shots of the neighborhood on to us.  The neighborhood hasn’t changed a bit, has it?

SR-710 Tunneling Through Highland Park?

Boring Sites

As the battle over the 710 rages on, Highland Park has fallen into the fold. Caltrans has begun a technical study of continuing the freeway using an underground tunnel, and plans on boring test sites all throughout our neighborhood.

In June 2008, Caltrans and Metro began the SR-710 Tunnel Technical Study to examine the possibility of extending the SR-710 using a tunnel. The study is being conducted in a route neutral manner. This means that all reasonable and practicable alternatives for completing the route are being considered within the Study area, which encompasses the cities of Alhambra, Glendale, La Cañada-Flintridge, Los Angeles, Monterey Park, San Marino, South Pasadena and Pasadena. Information gathered throughout the Study will describe soil and sub-surface conditions and will determine the feasibility of building a tunnel to complete SR-710. This study is not an environmental assessment.

This Tuesday, April 28th, at 6:30 pm is a community meeting with the SR-710 Tunnel Technical Study Outreach Team. All members of the community are strongly encouraged to attend to voice concerns or simply learn more about what is going on.

The meeting will be at Blair High School Cafeteria, 1201 S. Marengo Avenue, Pasadena 91106.

For more information, you can visit the SR-710 Tunnel Study Information Website, and also download the entire PDF of the above map here.

Los Angeles’ best country band will be the main event at this year’s Lummis Day.  The annual music, comedy, and cultural event will be held June 4th at Sycamore Grove Park.  The lineup is still developing so check their site to stay up to date.  Unfortunately, there will be no Jackson Browne encore performance.
